For a long time, I thought I needed a perfect daily routine to feel more in control of my days. Morning routines, night routines, detailed schedules — I tried all of it. What I’ve learned is that what actually helps isn’t a perfect routine.
It’s a few Small Habits that make everything else easier. These are the small things I do consistently that help my days feel less chaotic and more manageable.
1. I Meal Plan for the Week
Every Thursday, I take a few minutes to plan out our meals for the next week.
I don’t make anything fancy — I just:
- decide what we’re having for dinners
- think about easy lunches if the kids don’t have school during the week
Having a plan means I’m not standing in the kitchen at 5 pm wondering what to make. It also helps me know exactly what we need at the store. This way, I avoid buying random things and hoping it works out.
This one Small Habit alone saves me time, money, and mental energy.
2. I Grocery Shop for the Week
I usually grocery shop on Fridays so we’re set up for the weekend. I leave work at 2:30 and go straight to the store with list in hand. I usually make this list as I’m making my meal plan to make sure I’m not missing anything.
I make sure we:
- have everything for the meals I planned
- have enough snacks for the kids
- don’t run out of basics like milk, bread, and things that the little’s will eat
One thing I’ve learned is that weekends feel way more stressful when we don’t have food in the house. Making sure we’re stocked — especially with snacks for the littles — helps us avoid constantly running back to the store. We normally don’t order food unless it’s a special occasion like a birthday.

3. I Do Laundry Once a Week (Plus Towels Midweek)
Instead of doing laundry every day, I try to do:
- one main laundry day on Saturday each week
- and a smaller towel load midweek
This keeps laundry from taking over the whole week.
Having a routine for it means:
- clothes don’t pile up as much
- I know when it’s getting done
- and I’m not constantly thinking about it
It’s not perfect, but it’s predictable — and that helps a lot.
4. I Color-Code Our Family Calendar
One thing that helps me keep track of everything is color-coding our calendar.
Each child has their own color, and school events have a separate color for things like:
- early outs
- special school days
- activities or appointments
When I look at the calendar, I can quickly see:
- who has what
- how busy a week is
- and where I might need to plan ahead – Like sports night is leftover night
It makes everything feel more organized instead of jumbled together.
5. I Set Up Tomorrow the Night Before
Before I go to bed, I try to do a few small things to help the next day go smoother:
- lay out clothes – or have an idea of what I want to wear
- check my planner to see what’s happening the soon
- write down what I need to remember
It only takes a few minutes, but it helps mornings feel calmer and more prepared instead of rushed and reactive.
Why These Small Habits Matter
None of these things are complicated.
They aren’t fancy systems or perfect routines.
They’re just small habits that:
- reduce last-minute stress
- cut down on decision-making
- and help our days feel more predictable
If your days feel chaotic, you don’t need to change everything at once.
You just need one habit that makes life a little easier.
Start with one.
Build from there.
That’s what’s worked for me.
